"Caged hens are a sad reality of modern-day farming. In fact, I don't think it can even be referred to as "farming" as we understand it, because everything about it is horrendous. Who on earth dreamed the idea up?"

—Jamie Oliver
Jamie at Home: Cook Your Way to the Good Life

"The problems of factory farming are so vast and horrendous that you simply have to support kinder alternatives, even if they are far from perfect. I'm not going to buy "humane meat" for various reasons, but I do respect the person who makes that choice in the sense that I can at least relate to the way they think about the issues."

—Jean Kazez, PhD
(from the blog "In Living Color")

"Animals can communicate quite well. And they do. And generally speaking, they are ignored."

—Alice Walker

"Factory farming is the single biggest cause of animal cruelty."

—WSPA website

“95 percent of the animals slaughtered each year do not receive protection under the federal Humane Methods of Slaughter Act. And, while each state has its own animal cruelty code, most states exempt common farming practices, no matter how abusive.”

—The Humane Society of the United States

"Does my view mean that people can go on eating meat without concern? No, it does not. Absolutism functions only as an attempt at domination; that is, accept this rule and you won't be required to think ever again! Many good reasons exist to moderate our eating habits to semivegetarian practice. These reasons should count with all of us, and we must decide for ourselves what sort of balance is possible in our own lives."

Kathryn Paxton George, Professor of Philosophy

After all this time
After all of these seasons
After your one decision to go to the water for reason
It’s only the ocean and you
All of these lines will be erased soon
They go out with the tide
Then come back with the waves
It’s only the ocean and you

Lyrics from Only the Ocean by Jack Johnson

Jack Johnson's music and lyrics reveal him to be a thoughtful and sensitive songwriter. His latest release To The Sea was recorded at his two solar-powered studios: The Mango Tree in Hawaii and the Solar Powered Plastic Plant in Los Angeles.

It comes as no surprise then to hear that this eco-activist/singer/surfer is a flexitarian. In a recent National Post interview Jack Johnson was asked if he's a vegetarian. He replied, "Most of the time. A flexitarian, I guess. in the sense that I always shop and order vegetarian, but if I’m at someone’s house, I eat what’s served. I’m a vegetarian when I can be."

You've got to love his music and his Zen-like attitude.
